You can´t go wrong in Minho, but Pousada Valença will raise your culinary experience to a totally different level. The restaurant, decorated with tableware from Viana and Coimbra, in hand-painted porcelain and stoneware, has a both rustic and sophisticated charm at the same time. The menu features some of the most emblematic and sought-after dishes in the region:: Minho-style green broth, roast goat, São Teotonio-style cod, the classic Marrare-style sirloin steak, in addition to the awesome Valença-style Borrachudos. You also have the pousada´s classic starters of olive oil, olives and bread to look forward to, and we suggest you plan ahead and try one of these special dishes at a time.
Be sure to try the excellent barbecued golden codfish, lagareiro-style octopus legs and original scented shrimps with browned sweet potatoes. And of course, don´t forget the traditional Posta. If you need an excuse to tuck into this huge, amazingly tasty piece of meat prepared in a unique manner, walk around the fort a few times first so you can say that all the exercise has whetted your appetite. Incidentally, you can always use this excuse whenever you decide to try one of the exquisite kinds of convent-style sweets or original Borrachudos, made from corn bread, cinnamon and red wine, and their unique, remarkable flavour. Rice pudding, crème brûlée, French toast and Papos d’anjo are just some of the other tempting delicacies on the menu.
