Castle. They are all excellent starting points to explore the charming town, with its medieval streets and white facades decorated with flowers, or to try the iconic Ginjinha de Óbidos (morello cherry liqueur) and the various cultural and adventure activities available in the region.
HISTORY
The walled village goes back to the times before nationality itself existed. The village was conquered by the Moors by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. Over the centuries, it formed part of the successive queens’ dowries and was bequeathed [to the nation]: in 1498 Queen Leonor built the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy) and its Church and Hospital. Decades later, D. Catarina had the aqueduct and fountains built for the village. The well-preserved medieval ambience, the beauty of the region, and its proximity to Lisbon and several other places of interest, tend to attract more and more visitors. In a continual effort to restore heritage, the Pestana Group reconverted a building located in the village centre into the Pousada Charming.
